26 June 2003 The UK Institute of Packaging presented some 120 Starpack awards for innovative packages and packaging machinery. A record 13 received Gold awards for outstanding creativity and fitness for purpose. The institute’s chief executive John Webb-Jenkins said “The
standard of entries and innovation never fails to inspire me. “Once again I’m delighted that the businesses which represent
all areas of packaging have risen to the challenges posed by Starpack and have
delivered a raft of ground-breaking designs.
It was also a great pleasure to see the outstanding entries in our two
new categories – The Starpack Machinery Award and the Starpack Packaging
Business of the Year Award.” The winners
are eligible for the World Packaging Organisation’s Worldstar Awards, which
will be judged later this year.

This pack displays exceptional ergonomic design
which incorporates an excellent dispensing system for granular lawn
treatment. Boasting clear consumer
benefits the clever design ensures that when the pack is folded away there is
no risk of contamination. When in use
the pack is held by the handle, which has been angled to achieve maximum,
even flow of the granules. The
distinctive shape of the pack, the body of which is blow moulded from HDPE,
with parts injection moulded from polypropylene, presents an impressive shelf
presence in large DIY outlets. |

specimens, safely and economically secured for transportation and delivery to
patients, surgeries and laboratories.

which are often fragile and may put both sender and recipient at risk. Compact, strong and easy to assemble,
Safebox principally comprises two elements – a clear polycarbonate inner that
provides protection for specimens and a PP outer with a separate document
compartment. Security is assured with
a tamper evident feature resulting in enhanced protection for all users. |

Reflecting the shape of the product, the design
overcomes a number of technical difficulties to achieve a spherical shape
from PET which has not previously been achieved. For ease of display, the base of each pack features an inverted
dome, so that it can be stacked with the top of one pack fitting into the
base of the next. To maximise shelf
presence in a ready to display manner a clear APET tray was developed that
enables the jar to sit neatly into place for safe transportation, whilst also
optimising impact. This stunning
design also features brilliant shrink sleeve technology as well as good
opening and closures. |

Offering superb consumer convenience this pack also
offers a number of benefits which are popular with end-users. Cutlery is notoriously difficult to secure
in place on a display tray but the novel use of a multi-purpose, ‘invisible’
device overcomes this problem to secure all shapes and sizes of cutlery. The
pack designs are suitable for use with 24/30, 44/50 price and 78/80 pieces
sets, helping to reduce manufacturing costs. High quality print processing
helps to reinforce the brand status. |

sleeve that improves brand image, whilst providing tamper evidence. In addition the pack can be used for
either water or solvent based paints. |

An elegantly shaped pack which would not be out of
place on a dining table or in any entertaining scenario, this design for
Nestle’s After Eight chocolates is an entirely new and original format for an
established brand. An injection
moulded body and lid creates a unique curved form which is coupled with a
base unit that holds the trays in place.
This curvy design, together with a highly decorated top creates high
on-shelf impact. Colour
co-ordination between the pack and labels is excellent, resulting in a
‘no-label’ appearance. Overall an
exceptionally good pack to enhance brand image. |
